I don’t know how, but this image appears out of nowhere every 2-3 months and becomes the topic of discussion. However, there’s more to this classic piece of trivia. The entire blog is written in jumbled words (keeping the first and last character same, which the study says) to understand the science behind this phenomenon.
It seems lgeit rgiht. Bceuase you are acutally raeidng it! Isn't it amzanig?
Wihle it cnoatins a grain of turth, the raeilty is mcuh mroe cmolpex! There never was a Cmabrige resaerhcer, but there is smoe sceicne bhenid why we can raed that jmulbed txet. If you wree albe to raed the lsat two teewts of the bolg whutiot fciang any dciiltfufy, you can snsee the poewr of yuor biran and the snceice bheind it. I hpoe you are not fniding this aonnynig!
The poonnhemen is called Typoglycaemia and it wkros basucee our brnais don't jsut rley on waht tehy see - tehy aslo rley on waht we excpet to see! Eiecfvetfly, our barnis crsucotnt an ilidebcnry cempolx jisagw pzlzue unsig any pceies it can get aeccss to. In 2011, reeehrasrcs form the Utnsivriey of Glasogw, cudiocntng ulrteeand rreaesch, fuond taht wehn sitoehmng is obscured from or unacelr to the eye, hmaun mndis can pcerdit waht tehy tnhik tehy're gonig to see and flil in the balnks.
However there are several caveats -
It's much easier to do with short words, probably because there are fewer variables. It's easier to read 'waht' as compared to 'cempolx'!
Words that provide grammatical structure, such as AND, THE , A, tend to stay the same because they are too short to jumble. This helps the reader in reading a sentence and enhances the prediction power of guessing the word.
Switching adjacent letters is easier to translate than switching more distant letters. porbelm is easier to read as compared to plorebm!
None of the words can be jumbled to make another word. For example , jumbling trail to trial makes it difficult to read. In essence, the jumbled word shouldn't make any sense.
It also helps to keep double letters together. It's much easier to read aoccdrnig than adcinorcg.
There's also an evidence that shape of the text plays a role too. That's why it is difficult to read mixed case texts.
There's so much we don't know about our brain yet. It just amazes me every time when I learn something new that the brain is capable to do. I bet that internet trivia wouldn't have you believe all the fascinating cognitive processes behind this science.
See you next Saturday, until then have a great weekend :)
Cheers!
