Last week I was on a call with my parents and my mom started narrating an incident, which made me utter, “arre mummy yaaaaaar“. Trust me you will have this same innocent reaction when you hear the story. She was looking for a caption for her new instagram upload and since AI is all over the news, she thought of giving chatGPT a try to see what the fuss is all about. Having no expertise as a prompt engineer, she tried framing a brief description of the picture, hit enter, and waited to be surprised by what looked like a magic spell ready to blurt out fancy english words straight out of GRE vocab. Disappointed. Her first reaction. Naah. Try again. Ugh. Regenerate. After repeating this 4-5 times, she decided to prompt chatGPT by explaining it what she ‘wanted’ - the idea she was trying to convey through that picture. And guess what the AI said?
“Wow! That sounds like a perfect plan. This is creative and has the potential to captivate a wide audience with its visual appeal and storytelling.“
And my mom, in a voice as elated as that of a child unwrapping a long-awaited present on Christmas morning, exclaimed, “AI liked my idea! It was unable to come up with something interesting. It completed me. My idea.”
I swear the confidence in her voice was as strong as the mighty oak tree standing firm against the strong winds on a stormy night. But with a heavy heart, I brought her to reality by explaining the ‘hows?’ and the ‘whats?’ of these AI tools.
Just two days ago, Meta AI dropped a new family of the Llama models (Llama-3) and the benchmark numbers on their Llama 3 blog post makes it the best available models in the market right now. I think we (or atleast me!) don’t realize that we live in such a bubble on X. We forget that the average person has not even used ChatGPT yet, leave apart the other fancy AI tools. Or even if they have (for eg. my parents), they have used it to try it once in order to satiate their curiosity and never again. For people like me, whose starting point for anything new has become a quick conversation with the AI tools, it is easier to get swayed away by the hype around.
"We're rolling out this new version [of Meta AI] that, with the Llama 3 upgrade, we believe is now the most intelligent AI that everyone is going to be able to freely use”. ~Zuckru
What Meta is doing now, is something phenomenal. They have pushed for the big AI adoption by dropping these models, free of cost, directly into their products (WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook). What this means is that they are putting a powerful AI directly into the hands of 3B+ users, which means the average person is now, for the first time, going to try their hands on AI. Now if it is going to be misused or people will just use it to create innovative goodmorning texts, that only time will tell. But it is safe to say that the AI race is wide open now, with models getting a massive distribution.
A little achievement I think is worth sharing - Yesterday I completed my first ever 5K and 5 mile run. Pushing through those miles, battling both physical and mental barriers, is nothing but a game of resilience and determination. I realized running at a constant pace is more of a mental effort as compared to physical. If you too are motivated by this - my only tip would be to find an interesting podcast or a playlist that can keep you busy while running. Here's to setting goals, challenging ourselves, and celebrating every step of the way!
