#125 The Future Trap
September 16, 2023
In a world filled with constant hustle and bustle, it seems like we're always chasing something just out of reach. From the moment we're born, we're conditioned to think about the future, to plan, and to strive for better days ahead. While some people advise us to "live in the present," this advice often feels like an elusive goal. Why is that?
Think back to your childhood. From a very young age, we were probably told to study hard, set goals, and plan for our future. "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is a question we've all been asked countless times. While these lessons may have been well-intentioned, they've also planted the seeds of future-focused thinking.
Living in the present means being fully aware of what's happening right now, without constantly worrying about what might happen in the future. It sounds wonderful in theory, but I feel like it’s not a practical advice. The reality is that many of us find ourselves trapped in the "future mode," always planning, anticipating, and stressing about what's next. You've likely heard the advice to "live in the moment" or "enjoy the present." While these words are well-meaning, they often feel like empty platitudes. It's not that we don't want to live in the present; it's that the demands of modern life make it difficult.
One reason why we struggle to live in the present is that we're wired for survival. Our brains are designed to constantly scan for threats and opportunities. This evolutionary adaptation served our ancestors well, helping them survive in a dangerous world. This mindset motivates us to secure our well-being, allocate resources efficiently, and develop problem-solving skills. It fosters resilience, responsibility, and a sense of purpose.
The key lies in finding the right rhythm for our own life, a melody that resonates with the goals, dreams, and the beauty of the present moment. Cherish the ability to plan, aspire, and strive, but never forget to pause, breathe, and appreciate the wonders of today.
See you next weekend, have a wonderful week ahead :)
Cheers!
